Existentialism

Warning – This is a long one and probably meanders quite a bit. Read at your own peril!!!

When I first discussed philosophy with people about 2 years ago I was labelled an existentialist by others. At first I accepted the label with only a rough idea of what it meant. Since that time I have made it a goal to find out what being an existentialist is and what kinds of philosophy there are. I can’t say that my reading so far has been comprehensive or in depth but I have discovered something which makes me think that I am not an existentialist at all. Read More »

Philosophy & Psychology

In a discussion into “what should the aim of philosophy be” it was brought up that at one point philosophers were scientists, advancing technology and scientific thinking with their works. It would appear that this is no longer the case and that philosophy is becoming irrelevant and antiquated. I think I know why. Read More »

Okay so I betrayed my beloved this weekend. Yes it is my shame that I whent out and purchased another FPS game. This non Battlefield game promised a realistic soldier experience and other such “delights”.

ArmA (Armed Assault) is the sequel to Operation Flashpoint and as I had enjoyed some of that games potential (and they didn’t have Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Las Vegas in anywhere!) I bought a copy and so too did Mike. Read More »

Judgement vs Perception

I’ve been thinking recently on the values of the two MBTI facets J (judgement) and P (perception).

For those not familiar with the MBTI these values basically cater for those with a preference to plan (J types) and those with a preference to “wing it” (P types).

I grew up as an INTP in a house full or those with the J preference. My father is an ENTJ, my mother was an ISFJ and my sister is an ENFJ. I’m not sure as to the effect of this on my personality, whether I was allowed to rebel or if I fitted myself into their more structured lifestyles. I do know that out of the four of us I was most often the most laid back and relaxed.

That bit of background out of the way now on to the theory and the reason for the post (as tenuous as that may always be). Read More »

It’s finally here. The time when the software catches up with the hardware and then trounces it.

Granted this seems more due to inadequate optimisiation but it would appear that such programs are becoming the norm.

There are notable exceptions such as Oblivion, which as far as I am aware is well optimised but still can eat a computer alive with it’s vast viewing distances and startling details. However Read More »

Ever since my mother died I have found myself growing closer to my father. We had problems whilst he was still married to my mother (damn that sounds odd to me), either because I was young and not developed enough or because he had so far not broken the tie which was keeping him from being what he wanted to be, ie the marriage. I watched this episode of Top Gear last night and I’m amazed at those from the states who made staring roles in the episode.
I’ve no doubt that there will be some kind of utube or podcast about it so I’ll keep this short (for those with the benefit of proper (read BBC) broadcasts, the episode will be repeated this Tuesday evening (tomorrow)).

Basically the episode details their version of a fly and drive holiday, though the term holiday is used lightly. They flew to the states and bought cars for $1,000 to drive them instead of hire cars. They had a few tests to do (like 0-50mph-0 on a track, with “the hamster” almost being eaten by crocodiles (or are they alligators?)) and then an 800 mile run through to New Orleans. Read More »

Right well there would appear to be a catagorisation of philosophies that most people are clinging to like zealots to the cannon of true law. Me, well I’m known for having to be different. “Awkward” I think is the most often used descriptor. However I think I’m reaching towards the obvious (to me) conclusion in regards to philosophy. Ok so talking to a friend today over email I am once again reminded of how harsh I can be, especially to myself.

Origionally I thought that in being harsh about myself I could guard against my ego creeping out too much. I could ensure that I sailed closer to the tack as laid out by my mother where the consideration of “there’s always somebody worse off than you” is prominent. However increasingly I am finding it a blockage both to my growth and to the identification of other failings I have. Read More »
