House

There was a long forum thread over on INTP Central about whether the character House (played by Hugh Laurie) was an INTJ or an INTP. The initial assumption was that he was an INTP and I disagreed. To me the whole character screamed INTJ with his overly decisive comments about people and the way in which he dismisses criticism with a quip and a put down. Read More »

Latest project – Modding my Antec Nine Hundred Case.

I bought this case originally because I wanted a case that wouldn’t fall short in it’s air cooling potential, not for a long while anyway. What I didn’t realise at the time was that all that cooling would come at the expense of a lot more noise. These days I’m more into custom solutions than I am accepting what is given to me. Hence I’m adding some “design features” to this case to get that noise down. Read More »

The importance of being tweaked

Okay so I’ve got a little confession. I just ordered myself two new spin point harddrives to replace the ones currently in my computer. This decision was not logical nor particularly reasoned. The new ones are much larger (500Gb as opposed to 80Gb) and supposed to be very quiet and reliable however that does not make the decision any less one based on wants and shiny things. I also ordered a SATA DVD drive to replace a perfectly good IDE one on the same points as above. Read More »

Okay so I decided at one point to check out this Linux phenomena. I tried to download the iso file and failed like six times. So with a handful of scrap disks and some frustration I decided to just buy the damn stuff from the linux shop. At £6 and under per OS inc delivery I got 4 different versions. I got Xandros for the laptop and Kubuntu, Ubuntu and SUSE for my desktop. Obviously I haven’t had long to try them out, due to my motherboard going TU, but my initial impressions are mixed.

Linux loads beautifully and you kinda end up wondering what MS has been messing about at. SUSE in particular has to have one of the best initial load screens I’ve ever seen. Full picture in decent resolution and with a nice design and I’m just talking about the bit that loads to let you choose between loading up Windows or Linux!! It’s very snazzy.

Anyhow once you’ve got past the snazzy bit it gets much more complex. Read More »

Well my machine is down again. I’m fairly certain it’s not my fault this time but only time and the RMA department at Ebuyer will tell.

I bought the EVGA 680i after reading many rave reviews and to be fair they seem like one of the best enthusiast computer manufacturers out there. With this board you can remove every heatsink and replace the thermal compound without invalidating the warranty. That’s excellent. What they don’t tell you is that it’s advisable for long term care (hence why I replaced mine though it looks like I caught it too late). Read More »
