An oft complained about song by my friend from school comes to mind today.
I doubt he would argue with this case though.
My bosses came to me with a new contract this week, more money and more hours. So kinda wheel and woe right? Well they added the caveat that they wanted my memory to improve… no mean feat in my terms. In fact they went on and on about it almost as though they knew their purchase on this as a complaint was shaky at best.
Then the irony. Today I handed my cup to one of them asking for a cup of tea as he went to get himself a drink (he did offer, just in case you’re wondering). He returned some 5 minutes later with nothing chastising himself for forgetting and taking my snide remarks in his stride. He left and returned again 10 minutes later with, in his hands, his bottle of squash and my cup… of coffee…
Lesson 1 never be a smartass as there’s always going to be a bigger fish and you might just end up falling over it and looking like a real idiot.

A thought occurred to me whilst reading some Clarkson. His daughter asked him what the British "do" (or something along those lines). Now he was stuck because we’ve lost our engineering and our innovations only ever see the light of day on some TV show where a bunch of quite fiscally minded people argue whether the idea is profitable or not (The Dragons Den for those in the know). There’s no real drive for the next great thing. Aside from one or two projects and those engaged in classical science it always feels like we’re just following in the footsteps of other countries.

Modern art has been a subject of debate recently as my new friends are one artist and her rather pragmatic but model painting SO. Now you would have thought that a miniature painter would have an appreciation for art, I myself took art as a subject at college, which I later dropped or rage quit as my esteemed colleague would phrase it, but no both he and I abhor it. This of course led to an argument with his SO as she is a fan.

So I was watching Question Time last night and something struck me harder than it usually does. Sure you had the BNP leader there, Mr Nic Griffin, and they had the whole furore about him and his “fascist” party being represented on such an austere show but that wasn’t what struck me as both dumb and indicative of a larger problem.

A conversation with a friend got me thinking this weekend. I grew up as the only P amongst a family of Js and the balance between the two, to me, is quite special.

I figured out a theory last night whilst elbow deep in computer parts and UV blue water… I think my independent thinking is a form of defence, a survival technique if you like which I developed in response to bullies.

Have you ever wondered just how much of you is you?
How many of your opinions come not from your own assessments of the world around you but are more based in what is expected of you, what is passed down to you, what you are taught through the propaganda of social conditioning?

It’s a term that’s bandied about a lot in regard to those who spend their free time in a similar vein to me. The roleplayers, the computer enthusiasts. My father is probably also considered a geek or a nerd with trainspotting and his history on the chess team. It’s most often used as a term of derision but I’m of the thinking that people are being mislead.

So I’ve been looking around recently and the number of things similar to Facebook or twitter stating up seems unending. Apparently you can get a degree in “social networking” (read messing about on Facebook) as it represents the future of communication. Oh dear.

Many people end up in arguments with me, most tell me I’m an argumentative person… I’m always left wondering why.
