Everything to do with roleplaying games from theory and thoughts on the basic premises to reviews of systems and reports of sessions…

A new level based concept

Right the whole problem with D&D concepts of levels is that apparently you’re only option is to start out as some peon who knows nothing and can do little and then pit yourself against everything until next week when you gain unlimited power. This we know is flawed.

Firstly why?

Secondly why can’t I start with some skill, some reason to think I would be of use or indeed survive as an adventurer?

Thirdly why don’t more people adventure? It seems like the fast track route to fame and glory and UNLIMITED POWER…. And yet adventurer’s are always the exception without being exceptional to begin with…

Roleplay games for the uninitiated…

I started out writing about roleplay games for those who already played but the more I think about it the more I’m of the thinking that I should include those new to the game as without them the hobby dies off and writing for the community of roleplayers possibly means a lot of deaf ears as I’d estimate that many have already thought what I’m thinking and have written what I have.

Anyhow to aid those unfamiliar with the concept I offer… the wikipedia.

Temporal issues

Fantasy RPG settings are usually a well crafted affair with distant cities and intricate politics. The scenery rolls out before you presenting you with idyllic grassland, deep woods and jagged mountains. You can see the smoke rising from the hearths, you can smell the horses and general low tech lifestyle… then you introduce the players and the DM…

Roleplay is one thing and Rollplay is another. To Rollplay all you need is a vague excuse to kill the next thing coming and some dice and structure to decide if it works or not, roleplay is almost a breed apart.

To put it plainly, the problem I’m pussy footing around, if you’re in a fantasy setting then play as a fantasy character and not Neo with a new wardrobe! Read More »

The problem with d20…

Okay so go look across the internet or your local store and you’ll find d20 roleplay everywhere. It’s omnipresent and kind of the new standard rules system for every game. However all is not perfect or really even well thought out…

At first level you’re basically a commoner with potential. Sure you’ve usually got better strength and constitution (or whatever) than your common pleb but in actual proficiency and competence your about trainee level. Then you go out on your quest for the lost squidgy spoon or your mission to save the republic from dark side wielding bunnies for say two weeks. Now two weeks in an intense engagement means that you’re racking up the good old experience at a frightening rate. It means that when you return to your hamlet you are now usually capable of taking on the guard sometimes all at once as an individual!! It works out that once you’re level 5 then those who are at level 1 no longer pose much of a threat if at all. It also means that for some mystical reason you increase in skill at basket weaving only by killing ugly looking things with a sword or a blaster. Strange no?

I chose this system for my first review because it’s the system we’re currently getting to grips with for our new campaign and new DM.

On first contact you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is just another D20 clone with 3rd/ 3.5 Edition rules throughout. However this is an adapted version of those rules and there are some important differences. For the purpose of these reviews I’m going to assume that anyone who’s interested in roleplaying games has spent enough time with the 3rd/ 3.5 edition version of Dungeons & Dragons to know most of the rules so I won’t go into explaining everything but rather use that as a benchmark for comparison.
